Sony Ericsson W600i Cell Phone Review
Sony Ericsson's W600i is another phone in their Walkman line up of cell phones that double up as music players. While unmatched quality in sound is something we take for granted with Sony, let's see how the W600i stacks up against the dozens of other phones with audio playback facilities.
SE W600i: The Phone First and foremost, it's a phone, supporting GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and EDGE high-speed data transfers. The W600i offers very good reception, as with many other Sony Ericsson phones. Talk time and standby time are rated at 6 hours and 200 hours respectively, but you do get at least 4 hours of talk time which is very good. Connectivity options include Bluetooth and Infrared, and other functionalities include WAP browsing, e-mail client, IM, SMS and MMS.
The phone also provides Java MIDP 2.0 for the latest 3D games for the phone, which is good. Being a cameraphone, it sports a 1.3 megapixel camera giving good quality images. PIM functions offered by the phone include Calculator, Alarm Clock, Contacts, Business Card Exchange, Stopwatch, Tasks and Timer. You also get a few utilities to manipulate sounds, images and videos directly on the phone: MusicDJ, PhotoDJ and VideoDJ.
Games can be played sideways as well, which is very good since the W600i sports a 1.8" screen.

SE W600i: The Walkman Audio formats supported by the phone include MP3, MP4, 3GP, AAC, AMR, MIDI, WAV among others. MP3s recorded at 192kbps can be played back as well. The only pity is that Sony Ericsson included only 256MB of memory on the phone without an option to expand it. So you will have to either keep rotating the songs on your phone frequently or get used to the included FM radio.
The phone supports standard 3.5mm stereo jack which is a relief. It, however, does not support Microsoft's PlaysForSure DRM'd media. As usual, it offers great audio quality, so you have a winner in this department.
Pros: MP3/AAC/AAC+ support, FM, Bluetooth, NetFront, great little LCD.
Cons: No room for expansion, no support for Bluetooth headphones.
Miscellaneous The W600i feels a bit on the heavier side at 120 grams, and the bundled speakers are not the best. You will be tempted to upgrade your features. However, nothing makes up for the lack of expandable memory.
We wish there was some way to decently maintain your playlists - rotate them, even - an application that runs on the phone would've been great.
My Rating: 3 Stars out of 5
